Anthony Hopkins: Alfred Hitchcock was 'utter paradox'

Anthony Hopkins thought Alfred Hitchcock was a paradoxical man.
The Oscar-winning actor had to dig deep to play the iconic 'Psycho' filmmaker in Sacha Gervasi's new biopic 'Hitchcock', and after extensive research he discovered the character was an interesting mix of conflicting emotions.
Anthony said: ''Researching I realised that Hitch was an utter paradox. I wouldn't say, 'I become Hitchcock'. I don't do that, because I'd go mad. You can't become anyone, you just try to find a way to balance it so as to not make a caricature.
''I felt Sacha Gervasi had unlocked the story that no one else had previously done. The script gave me a lot of the information that I needed, and then I watched several documentaries and films on Hitchcock and began putting together all the pieces. He can be dark, troubled, cold, ruthless and obsessive and also big-hearted, warm and ingenious. That was all part of his nature.''
The 'Silence Of The Lambs' star hopes his understanding of the director makes the film and his relationship with his steadfast wife and collaborator Alma Reville (Helen Mirren) convincing, joking that the extensive prosthetics helped him feel the part if nothing else.
Anthony told Flicksandbits.com: ''The make-up and prosthetics helps enormously. It was trial and error, we did several tests - they did an extraordinary job. It took about an hour to put on in the morning. I'd sit in front of the mirror, we'd have a laugh, I'd fall asleep, then I'd wake up and I'd be like, 'Ah, that's him, yes.' ''
'Hitchcock' also stars Scarlett Johansson, James D'Arcy and Jessica Biel.
