Sam Mendes' drunken Skyfall offer

Nov 9 2012, 4:07am CST | by

Sam Mendes doesn't think he would have ever directed 'Skyfall' if Daniel Craig hadn't drunkenly suggested he do it when he met him at a party.

Sam Mendes would never have directed 'Skyfall' if Daniel Craig hadn't drunkenly suggested he do it.
The 47-year-old helmer was at a party when Daniel - who reprised his role as James Bond for the third time in the movie - came up to him and suggested he would be the ideal man for the job, and the filmmaker thinks it would have never occurred to him he could take on the role if it wasn't for the conversation.
He said: ''He wasn't that drunk and he didn't really offer it to me, he suggested it to me. It was a conversation ... And then it kind of went from there. I didn't really have any doubts.
''Had I not gone to the party, I think someone else would have directed it. I think it's true. And it may not have even, weirdly, occurred to me. I know it sounds crazy, but it was because someone said it to me and I thought, 'Oh, what a good idea.' Because, it's not like 'The Avengers', Bond movies don't get sent around. You're in a dialogue from early on, I think.''
Sam was presented with the opportunity to helm another huge film this year in the shape of 'Avengers Assemble', but he turned down the chance to direct the superhero movie after he was left unimpressed by a letter he received from Marvel to see if he wanted to put himself forward for the role.
Speaking to Moviefone, he added: ''The funniest letter I got - they were sending [a packet for] 'The Avengers', right? For directors to pitch - and I got a package, which was full of comic books, but no treatment; there was no script. But the cover letter said, 'Marvel's Avengers will be released on May 3, 2012', or whatever it was. That was the first sentence of the cover letter. Not, 'We have the pleasure of enclosing the materials ...' or 'Here is the script for ...' But the release date. That was the first sentence.
''I wasn't interested. I mean, that's not my world particularly. I'll go see it, particularly with my kids, but I didn't want to make it. But I was probably one of 50 that got sent it; they didn't target me specifically.''

‘Interstellar’ Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema Will Shoot ‘Bond 24′

Sep 17 2014 10:30am CDT | Source: slash film

Normally we’d have a large measure of sympathy for anyone who had to take over a job following Roger Deakins. And since Deakins isn’t shooting the new Bond film, someone has to step into his shoes. But the person to take over the job shooting Bond 24 is Hoyte van Hoytema, who did such a tremendous job with Her, and then shot Interstellar for Christopher Nolan. So things are probably going to work out just fine. ...

Bond 24 finds replacement for Roger Deakins

Sep 17 2014 12:46am CDT | Source: Total Film

Bond 24 looks to have found a replacement for cinematographer Roger Deakins, with Dutchman Hoyte van Hoytema set to sign on as director of photography. It was something of a disappointment to hear that Deakins would not be returning to the fold after doing such a stellar job on Skyfall, although van Hoytema certainly comes with real pedigree. Having made waves with his work on the original Let The Right One In, he re ...

A memorable foil appears to be in order for the November 2015 release. Bond 24 henchman to be a physical adversary for Daniel Craig?

Aug 25 2014 3:37am CDT | Source: Total Film

Bond 24 could see 007 confronted with one of the more physical villains he has faced in recent years, with one of the chief antagonists set to be a Jaws-esque brute. According to fan site MI6, the production team are searching for an actor to play what they describe as “the main assassin”, with the primary requirement being that they must be physically imposing. Successful applicants will need to be at least 6’ 2” in height, while the re ...

BOND 24 Villain Could Be a Bigger Adversary for Daniel Craig

Aug 23 2014 12:34pm CDT | Source: Collider

I’m one of the people who thought Skyfall was an incredible Bond film.  Between that and Casino Royale (I sort of consider Quantum of Solace to be an interstitial film, almost a short) I actually feel like James Bond is almost a current, relevant character (despite some of the old-fashioned fan service).  So I remain excited for Bond 24 even though it feels like something of a troubled production (the delays, the extensive reworking of ...

"Bond 24" Wants A Henchman, Austrian Locale

Aug 23 2014 11:57am CDT | Source: dark horizons

Whilst "Skyfall" saw the return of some of the more iconic elements of the James Bond franchise, one element that was missing is that of an iconic henchman - the last one arguably being Famke Janssen's Xenia Onatopp in "Goldeneye". A new report over at James Bond Radio claims that the twenty-fourth Bond film's director Sam Mendes is aiming to fill that gap and is looking for just such an actor. This one will apparentl ...
