Steven Spielberg gave Day-Lewis free rein in Lincoln

Steven Spielberg didn't want to ''get in the way'' of Daniel Day-Lewis' ''amazing'' acting in 'Lincoln' so he let the 'Gangs of New York' star have a free reign at portraying former US President Abraham Lincoln.

Steven Spielberg didn't want to ''get in the way'' of Daniel Day-Lewis' ''amazing'' acting in 'Lincoln'.
The 65-year-old director chose not to question the 'Gangs of New York' star, who portrays former US President Abraham Lincoln in the film, nor screenwriter Tony Kushner, when the movie was being created because he preferred to ''celebrate'' their work.
He said: ''I think Daniel, like Tony Kushner, understood Lincoln on a subatomic level, one that goes beyond anything I could articulate. I never asked Daniel about his process, I never questioned it; I never looked the gift horse in the mouth. I just received it with tremendous gratitude.
''With Daniel and Tony, I felt I was in between two giant figures in the landscape of theatre and performances and I was constantly saying to myself, 'Don't get in the way; celebrate these words, capture these performances, get it in the best way you know how.' And let the actors cast their long shadows. He's amazing.''
While Steven loved Tony's screenplay for 'Lincoln' - which is based on the best-selling book 'Team of Rivals' by historian Doris Kearns Goodwin - he had to cut down his first effort as it was nine hours long.
He added to FlicksandBits.com: ''When I got into the screenplay it was one of the most brilliant things I've ever read, but it was sprawling and epic and it was nine hours long, it was just impractical as a motion picture.''

The last time the news magazine put a movie on its cover was for St ...

Watch the Very Terrence Malick-y ‘The Better Angels’ Trailer

Oct 27 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: Slash Film

We’ve seen plenty of movies about Abraham Lincoln — including, most recently, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln — but none quite like this. The Better Angels takes place long before all of the stuff Lincoln got famous for, focusing instead on his childhood in the Indiana wilderness. Jason Clarke and Brit Marling play the parents of the future U.S. president (played as a kid by Braydon Denney), and Diane Kruger another maternal figure. It looks a bit like Tree of Life if it were shot ...

‘Magician’ Trailer: Revisit the Life and Work of Orson Welles

Oct 22 2014 6:30pm CDT | Source: slash film

Maybe I’m guessing wrong, but it feels like Orson Welles has fallen away from his perch at the top of the list of the most fascinating American filmmakers. We’re a couple decades removed from the prominence of the people who kept him in the conversation; other filmmakers have dominated the conversation as dialogue about film has changed. We’ve seen Citizen Kane fall from first to second on Sight a ...
