Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, who have directed films like The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, seems eager to take on the new challenge and hoping to bring something new and fresh for the audience.
“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.” the duo said in a statement.
The spinoff will focus on the early life of Han Solo and how he became the smuggler, thief and scoundrel. Lawrence Kasdan, who is already involved in multiple sequels and prequels of Star Wars series, is again on board as one of the executive producers of the film.
“We’re so excited to working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said Kasdan. “They are two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”
Han Solo appeared in the original 1977 Star Wars and the subsequent two sequels. The character was played by Harrison Ford but there is no word on who will play the role this time around.
Many new Star Wars chapters are already lined up from 2015 to 2019 including Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Rogue One. The new spinoff, whose title is not announced yet, is slated for a May 25, 2018 release date.
