Nicolas Cage excited to work with non-actors

Apr 11 2014, 10:12am CDT | by

Nicolas Cage was excited to work with amateur actors in 'Joe'.

The 'Ghost Rider' actor is currently starring as an ex-convict in the drama alongside a host of professional and non-professional actors including Gary Poulter, a homeless man who was discovered by the director David Gordon Green and his casting agents.

Quizzed on what it was like to work with amateur actors, Nicholas told Collider: ''It's an element of surprise. I was really up for it.

''The one I'm thinking of is Gary Poulter who plays Tye Sheridan's father in the movie. He was discovered doing Vincent Price's 'Welcome to My Nightmare' monologue from the Alice Cooper album about the black widow spider and David saw that and said I want to give you a part and he auditioned him and auditioned him and finally gave him the part.

''I thought it was exciting. This was an opportunity for me to try something new, working with non-actors. He never dropped the ball, he was always on point.''

The 50-year-old star plays a former convict who becomes an unlikely role model for Tye's character Gary, as he is faced with the opportunity to either redeem himself or run, and he took the preparation for his role very seriously.

He explained: ''I flew out a month early which is kind of unheard of in Hollywood. I wanted to bond with David, I wanted to understand his process and get in step with how he likes to make a movie.

''I got to meet with Tye to make sure that we had chemistry, so it was an enormously valuable experience to go to Austin a month early.''

Screenwriter Dan Gilroy Talks Tim Burton’s SUPERMAN LIVES; Says They Were Weeks Away from Filming Before Being Shutdown

Oct 24 2014 1:11pm CDT | Source: Collider

Tim Burton's Superman Lives is one of the great "What Ifs" of film history.  While today the concept of Tim Burton directing a Superman movie starring Nicolas Cage seems insane, keep in mind that around the time the movie was planning to shoot in 1998, Burton hadn't descended into self-parody and Cage was riding a wave of action film hits (The Rock, Con Air, and Face/Off) following his 1995 Oscar for Best Actor.  Also ...

'Superman Lives' Screenwriter Dan Gilroy Explains What Tim Burton Would Have Done

Oct 23 2014 3:33pm CDT | Source: movies.com

[Dan Gilroy directing on the set of Nightcrawler] In the late '90s, Warner Bros. was very keen to make a new Superman movie. An up-and-coming screenwriter named Dan Gilroy, whose big calling card at the time was the 1992 sci-fi movie Freejack, was hired to write a script that would be directed by Tim Burton and would star Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel. It was a dream job for Gilroy and he spent a year pouring everything he had into the movie, right on ...

Paul Schrader & Nicolas Cage Quietly Disavowing 'Dying of the Light'

Oct 17 2014 12:14pm CDT | Source: First Showing

The first trailer for Paul Schrader's CIA thriller Dying of the Light starring Nicolas Cage just premiered this week, and it didn't look half bad. However, you might remember that when the first look photo from the film surfaced, there were rumblings that Schrader has been removed from the editing room because the movie he was trying to cut "was a completely different movie from the movie that was greenlit, the movie ...

Nic Cage's 'Left Behind' Doesn't Have a Prayer at Box Office

Oct 5 2014 3:34pm CDT | Source: yahoo

Faith-based remake of the Kirk Cameron Rapture saga is overwhelmed by three other thrillers, “Gone Girl,” “Annabelle” and “The Equalizer” “Left Behind,” Nicolas Cage ‘s Biblical Rapture thriller, captured enough of the faith-based crowd at the box office this weekend, but its hopes of attracting mainstream crowds didn’t have a prayer. The remake of the 2001 Kirk Cameron film by the same name took in $6.8 million from 1,825 theaters. That’s a decent $3,726 per-screen average, particul ...

Left Behind Review

Oct 3 2014 5:08pm CDT | Source: ign

On paper, an end-of-days movie starring Nicolas Cage sounds kind of awesome and hilarious. (For the sake of argument, let's pretend Unknown never happened.) If nothing else, the idea of Cage running around and yelling at panicked civilians should be a gold mine for unintentional comedy. Sadly, his new movie Left Behind does its damnedest (no pun intended) to make sure Cage doesn't get one single freak-out moment, or really any human inte ...

LEFT BEHIND Review

Oct 2 2014 2:23pm CDT | Source: Collider

I am not a Christian, and I never thought Left Behind would ever convert me or appeal to my faith, but I hoped I could at least admire the courage of its convictions.  Instead, Vic Armstrong's adaptation of the best selling novel uses Christianity as nothing more than a ham-fisted plot point in a laughably cheap-looking movie that isn't reaching movie theaters because of the source material or the premise.  The movie doesn't exist by God's will.  Left Behind exists because ...
