Russell Crowe 'surprised' by extent of Noah controversy

Apr 1 2014, 4:12am CDT | by

Russell Crowe was ''surprised'' by the ''volume'' of controversy surrounding 'Noah'.

The Hollywood star hits the big screen as the titular character in the forthcoming film and although he anticipated criticism he didn't expect it would go as far as it has.

The film has been banned in numerous countries, including Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and the Middle East, among other places, because the governments of those countries believe it contradicts the teachings of Islam and some religious groups claim the story has been inaccurately portrayed.

Talking at the film's premiere in London's Leicester Square on Monday (31.03.14), he told BANG Showbiz: ''I think when you go to a movie like this you understand that there is going to be a lot of ... controversy.

''I was surprised by the volume of it. Because you are talking about people, who by and large, are making comments based on their imagination of what it might be in a movie that they haven't seen. So it's like, 'what'?!''

The 49-year-old actor shot scenes on an Icelandic beach and kept finding small stones in unwanted places days after filming.

Crowe previously said: ''That was pretty much all day lying around naked and they have these little stones, right, it's kind of as the lava meets the sea and they get smoothed off and what have you... these stones get really round.

''It was like four days (after shooting the scene), you're still getting dressed in the morning and these little stones are falling out and it's like, 'Where has that been for four days?'''

Director Darren Aronofsky, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone and

Logan Lerman all attended the film's London premiere.

WINTER’S TALE Blu-ray Review

Sep 2 2014 7:00am CDT | Source: Collider

Quentin Tarantino has complained about how one of the biggest problems with American cinema is that it’s afraid of big emotions.  Of melodrama that might descend into camp (or perhaps is camp to begin with).  And it’s true, more movies are likely to adapt an ironic distance than go for something earnest.  There’s a reason for that: when earnest doesn’t work, you get films like The Postman and The Room.  But that means some material just isn’t going to t ...

Shane Black to Direct THE DESTROYER Adaptation for Sony

Aug 21 2014 1:30pm CDT | Source: Collider

It was pretty much a given that Kiss Kiss Bang Bang helmer Shane Black would have some heat coming off of directing the $1.5 billion-grossing Iron Man 3, but the guy is amassing a seriously stacked docket of upcoming projects.  The latest one to be added is an adaptation of the long-running Warren Murphy book series The Destroyer.  Sony Pictures announced today that Black will direct a feature film ...

Akiva Goldsman May Pen New Draft of THE RING 3D

Aug 21 2014 11:24am CDT | Source: Collider

Yes, Akiva Goldsman is an Academy Award-winning screenwriter, but have you seen Winter’s Tale?  That’s the kind of movie that is so bad, it could wind up becoming a warped classic for that very reason.  In fact, the group I saw it with still hasn’t stopped talking about it.  “I like pecans,” “I have a chicken,” Colin Farrell’s haircut, Russell Crowe’s finger-painting – the list of absurdities could go on and on. Even ...

Noah DVD Review: Russell Crowe's Biblical Storm Finds a Home

Jul 30 2014 4:08pm CDT | Source: movie fanatic

Darren Aronofsky may have seemed like an interesting director to bring the classic bible story of Noah to life. But when his effort landed on screens in the form of Noah, audiences responded in droves to the epic. Now Noah has arrived on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download and what is so fascinating is that even though it is an epic that should be seen on the biggest screens on the planet, due to Aronofsky’s storytelling style and charac ...

NOAH Blu-ray Review

Jul 30 2014 8:00am CDT | Source: Collider

The sign of a good religious picture is the controversy surrounding it.  Whenever a movie asks you to seriously grapple with theological issues, it’s bound to rile those who like their religion safe and comforting.  Noah certainly prompted its share of screeching op-ed pieces, along with the smug indifference of the secular crowd.  In truth, director Darren Aronofsky has punk’d them all: creating a serious, thoughtful and unbearably intense study of our relationship to God in ...

New on DVD/Blu-ray: The Spectacular 'Noah,' the Surprisingly Sweet 'The Other Woman' and More

Jul 29 2014 6:01pm CDT | Source: movies.com

Noah - Paramount Pictures - Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD Director: Darren Aronofsky Cast: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone,Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson. Full cast + crew Noah is a stunning piece of filmmaking. Of course, that's to be expected when it comes to a movie about the construction of a giant ark intended to survive an apocalyptic flood, but Darren Aronofsky pushes his movie far beyond your standard biblical epic and turns it into a transcendent, engr ...

Writer Ari Handel Tells Us What Movie Was Harder to Get Made, 'Noah' or 'The Fountain'

Jul 28 2014 6:03pm CDT | Source: movies.com

Ari Handel was studying to become a neuroscientist when he met a young man named Darren Aronofsky at college. Fast-forward a decade or so, and now Handel is Aronofsky's most frequent collaborator, having coproduced The Wrestler and Black Swan, as well as having cowritten The Fountain. Their latest film together is Noah, starring Russell Crowe as a man tasked by visions from his God to build an ark before mankind ...

THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN LIVES; WHAT HAPPENED? Trailer Offers Amazing Glimpse Into What Could Have Been

Jul 25 2014 1:46pm CDT | Source: Collider

Superman Lives is one of the great (or not-so-great) lost movies of Hollywood.  Back in the mid-90’s Tim Burton came onboard the project alongside star Nicolas Cage and screenwriter Kevin Smith.  They actually got pretty far along in development (you’ve no doubt seen Cage’s infamous photo in the costume) before the whole thing fell apart.  Now, filmmaker Jon Schnepp is attempting to brave the waters and figure out what happened with his upcoming documentary, T ...

Hellboy 3: Epic Movie Sequels That Never Happened

Jul 21 2014 9:51am CDT | Source: movie pilot

Hellboy 3 isn't happening. It's sad, I know, but both actors and the director have confirmed that we won't get to see Big Red in action again. Hopefully a publicity stunt like the Aquaman deal but right now, it seems very, very unlikely. Anyway, we might as well get on with the post-mortem. What follows is Guillermo del Toro's idea for the movie. Hellboy was to finally come to terms with the fact ...

L.A.CONFIDENTIAL: The best neo-noir crime drama ever.

Jul 21 2014 9:08am CDT | Source: movie pilot

I had the good fortune of seeing L.A.Confidential for the fourth time last night, and I remain with my opinion that this is one of the finest American movies of the last fifty years. If nothing else, director and co-writer Curtis Hanson has turned an dense James Ellroy novel (who's enjambing attempts to make his fiction seem to the reader that they're actually in the mind of problematic crime fighters makes him unreadable)l into a riveting crime drama. In the midst of a ...city defined ...
