12 Years a Slave wins Best Picture Oscar

Mar 3 2014, 2:13am CST | by

'12 Years a Slave' was named Best Picture at the Oscars.

The film - based on the real life account by Solomon Northup, a free man who was sold into slavery in 1841 - took home the most coveted prize of the night, and was accepted by an ecstatic cast and crew including director Steve McQueen, producer and actor Brad Pitt, and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o.

Brad started the acceptance speeches, saying: ''Thank you for this incredible honour bestowed upon our film tonight. I know I speak for everyone behind me when I say it has been an absolute privilege to work on Solomon's story. We all get to stand up here tonight because of one man who brought us here to tell that story, and that is the indomitable Mr. Steve McQueen.''

Steve then took to the podium to give his thanks, reading out a list of collaborators.

He added: ''I'd like to thank this amazing historian, Sue Aitken, who gave her life to preserving Solomon's book.

''And I'd like to thank my partner Bianca ... My mother, my mum's up there, and my children, Alex and Dexter, and my father.

''Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live. This is the most important legacy of Solomon Northup. I dedicate this award to all the people who have endured slavery, and the 21 million people who still suffer slavery today.''

'12 Years a Slave' also took home two further prizes at the Academy Awards, with Luptia winning Best Supporting Actress and John Ridley winning Best Adapted Screenplay.

19 October Must-See Movies: Oh, The Horror!

Sep 25 2014 1:58pm CDT | Source: movie fanatic

The calendar is about to read October and for Hollywood studios that means two things. First, horror is on the brain as Halloween looms around the corner. Second, Oscar season is in full bloom as some of the biggest contenders for the medium’s highest awards will be landing  this month. It worked well for Gone Girl (October 3) star Ben Affleck when you watch Argo online. That film landed in October a few years back, and it won Best Picture! There are probably more horror movies s ...

Sep 17 2014 1:49pm CDT | Source: Collider

New posters for two of the most anticipated films of the year have arrived online.  Hot on the heels of yesterday’s icy one sheet, another new Interstellar poster grounds Matthew McConaughey on Earth in director Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi film.  It pairs nicely with yesterday’s space-set poster, and also focuses on what looks to be the emotional hook of the story: a father-daughter relationship.  I’m more than sold on this movie already, so ...

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Sequel Will Be 'Extremely Different' than the Book - But WHY?

Sep 15 2014 6:41pm CDT | Source: movie pilot

Making movies based on beloved novels is always a really tricky business. If you adhere too closely to the story, you might run the risk of making a movie with no real vision that doesn't necessarily adapt well to the screen. But if you deviate too much, you run the risk of angering the built-in fanbase of loyal readers who feel you've changed what they loved about the story in the first place. Apparently, director David Fincher's approach t ...

David Fincher Explains What Killed ’20,000 Leagues’, Still Hopes for ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Sequel

Sep 15 2014 1:30pm CDT | Source: slash film

This fall brings the release of Gone Girl, David Fincher‘s first theatrical release since 2011′s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. In between the two films, he was circling several others including the Dragon Tattoo follow-up The Girl Who Played with Fire and Disney’s Jules Verne adaptation 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The latter is definitely dead at this point, with Fincher even offering up an explanation as to where things went wrong. The director sounded a bit more optimist ...

‘Fury’ UK Trailer: Brad Pitt & Logan Lerman Battle Impossible Odds

Sep 8 2014 3:50pm CDT | Source: screen rant

Production on upcoming historical tank drama Fury wasn’t entirely smooth, according to rumors that supporting actor Shia LaBeouf refused to wash throughout the shoot in order to get closer to his character, and complaints about battle scenes being filmed on Remembrance Sunday.
