12 Years a Slave leads wins at London Critics' Circle Film Awards

Feb 3 2014, 10:06am CST | by

'12 Years a Slave' won three awards at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards on Sunday night (02.02.14).

The historical drama was named film of the year, while Chiwetel Ejiofor won actor of the year for his portrayal of Solomon Northup - a real-life figure who was kidnapped and sold into slavery - and his co-star Lupita Nyong'o took the prize for best supporting actress at the ceremony which was held at London's May Fair Hotel.

Director Steve McQueen - who was born and raised in London - was thrilled with the response the film has received and felt ''humbled and heart-warmed'' by the support.

McQueen - who lost out on best director category to Gravity's Alfonso Cuarón - said: ''It got people to the cinema. What's so interesting about the response from critics and audiences is that they want to see films which have some difficulties.

''They are interested in films where they have to work. They are interested the films where they see themselves reflected in the cinema screens.

''I have people in the street - builders, bus drivers - being so supportive to the movie. I've felt so much love for this film in this country and I'm so humbled and heart-warmed that it's from my own country.''

The ceremony began with film critic Jason Solomons paying tribute to the late American actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman as news of his death in New York City emerged.

Cate Blanchett was named actress of the year for her performance in Woody Allen's 'Blue Jasmine' and Dame Judi Dench won British actress of the year commended for her work in 'Philomena'.

Meanwhile, James McAvoy won best British actor for his work in 'Filth' and 'Trance'.

Gary Oldman, 55, was honoured with the Dilys Powell award for excellence in film and he was delighted about the recognition he'd been given.

He told the BBC News: ''I think, I think it's quite a big deal, I think it's a big deal tonight.''

Oct 27 2014 1:00pm CDT | Source: Slash Film

Without a doubt, Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar is one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2014. But whether it’ll deliver on those sky-high expectations is another question altogether. The first Interstellar reviews are in, and they’re really all over the map. One thing’s for sure, though: No one is faulting Nolan for lacking style or ambition. Hit the jump for the Interstellar review roundup. In summary: Visually, Nolan seems to remain at the top of the game. Where cr ...

VOTD: The Films Of Alfonso Cuaron

Sep 22 2014 7:00am CDT | Source: Slash Film

What Alfonso Cuaron lacks in quantity of films made, he damn sure makes up for in quality. He’s only made seven movies over almost 25 years but it’s as if he somehow gets exponentially better with each and ever one. I admit to not knowing much about his first feature, Love in the Time of Hysteria, but it allowed him to two whimsical crowd pleasers, A Little Princess and Great Expectations. From there, he directed the sexy, provacative Y Tu Mama Tambien then switched gears entirely by doing ...

Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN and TIE ME UP! TIE ME DOWN! Criterion Blu-ray Reviews

Sep 19 2014 2:46pm CDT | Source: Collider

Criterion has released two Spanish-language movies of a sexual nature, one from Mexico, one from Spain.  The former is Alfonso Cuaron’s Y Tu Mama Tambien (which translates to “And your mother too”), which Criterion has been promising for five years, while the other is Pedro Almodovar’s Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, which was notorious for its NC-17 rated content at the time.  My review of both Criterion editions of these film ...

A MOST VIOLENT YEAR Trailer and Poster; J.C. Chandor’s Film Starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac Opens Dec 31 in NY and L.A.

Sep 18 2014 1:05pm CDT | Source: Collider

J.C. Chandor is definitely on the rise, with a surprising amount of people favoring his dark horse Robert Redford film All Is Lost over Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity juggernaut in last year's "solo and in peril" sweepstakes.  And A Most Violent Year definitely looks like it could be the film that really solidifies his place on the map.  The film is set in New York in 1981 and revolves around “an American immigrant (Oscar Isaac) and his wife (Jessic ...

Has the Escape From New York Reboot Found Its Snake Plissken?

I know, I know. It's going to be hard to imagine anyone other than Kurt Russell playing the iconic role of Snake Plissken in the Escape From New York Reboot. However, for better or worse, that seems like an idea we're going to have to get used to.According to Starlog, a shortlist of three actors who are being considered for the role has just been released by Silver Pictures. Of course, as is often the case with these ...
