Ralph Fiennes drawn to Nelly Ternan

Ralph Fiennes was drawn to 'The Invisible Woman' because Nelly Ternan was ''wrestling'' with her ''love affair''.

The 51-year-old star both directs and stars in the forthcoming film, where he portrays famous Victorian author Charles Dickens but when he first read the script he was captured by the plight of his mistress.

Speaking at 'The Invisible Woman' UK premiere at London's Kensington Odeon cinema on Monday evening (01.27.14), he told BANG Showbiz: ''Because I play Dickens people think I was drawn to Dickens, which I was. But initially when I first read it, it was really Nelly.

''It was about the fact that here is a woman in her later life who is wrestling with a super love affair that's happened in her past that she has not had any closure with.''

Fiennes thinks many people will be able to relate to Nelly since everyone has dealt with a relationship which has affected them emotionally.

He explained: ''I think that everyone will have to deal in their lives with an intimate relationship, whether a parent, a sibling or love which has affected them and changed them. How you reconcile yourself to that, how you deal with it, how you live with it - carry it with love or sadness or despair.''

Felicity Jones was cast as Nelly and to do her character justice she thoroughly researched her role, visiting her childhood home and an exhibition on Dickens.

The brunette beauty explained: ''I actually went to visit the house where Nelly grew up - she grew up in North London in a cottage in Islington with her mother and sisters and so I got the opportunity to go in and see where she would have slept. It's things like that, I mean you use your instinct partly but at the same time going to the house.

''There was an amazing exhibition on at the same time at the London Museum. It was just phenomenal, which was all about Dickens. So I just try and absorb as much as possible and try and get in the head of that person.''

They were joined on the red carpet by Kristin Scott Thomas and Tom Burke.
