Kelly Marcel not daunted by Fifty Shades

Dec 24 2013, 12:08am CST | by

Kelly Marcel didn't feel pressure while writing the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' script.

The screenwriter had the difficult task of adapting E.L. James' best-selling novel for the big screen, but the British scribe insists she wasn't put off by the fervent fan discussion on social media about how the film should be written and made.

She explained to Collider.com: ''It's really fascinating to have it play out in real time. Normally, nobody knows the script is being written, they just hear about it when the film comes out.

''But these massive fans are having to sit there and wait for years. It's very difficult to make people understand that it doesn't all happen in three months. It takes time to build a script, and then it takes time to cast a film, and then it takes time to shoot the film and edit the film. It's interesting to hear their thoughts on that.''

''It was also very interesting to hear their thoughts on casting because those characters exist in their heads. I do think the social media thing is really fascinating, but it doesn't daunt me. I like it, in a weird way. It's helpful with something like that. With 'Fifty Shades', it was really helpful to see what people want and see if you can give it to them.''

The 'Fifty Shades' film will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and will star Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele.

The film is due for release in February 2015.

MAPS TO THE STARS Review | NYFF 2014

Sep 27 2014 8:55pm CDT | Source: Collider

I don’t like to admit it, but every now and then, I do enjoy picking up a tabloid.  Simply put, it’s fun to read about nonsense like what everyone’s wearing and see that celebrities are really “just like us.”  And the same goes for covering industry news as well.  I truly enjoy finding out what everyone’s up to, whether I’m a fan or not, and that’s a big part of the reason David Cronenberg’s latest works so well.  Maps to the Stars is a Hollywood satire that takes you behind the s ...

The Films of David Fincher: FIGHT CLUB

Sep 25 2014 3:44pm CDT | Source: Collider

[With the upcoming release of his new film Gone Girl, I’m taking a look back at the work of director David Fincher.  These articles contain spoilers.] The first rule of Fight Club is to talk about Fight Club.  The movie underperformed at the box office, and found life on DVD where it became a cult classic.  Within the context of the film, Tyler Durden's famous rule is a brilliant and ironic bit of marketing for a group of men trying to reject advertising and find human connecti ...

Emma Thompson On Her Screenwriting Process: A Purple Yoga Mat, A Hoover, & “A Lot Of Crying In Fetal Positions”

Sep 20 2014 6:26pm CDT | Source: Deadline

Quirky is possibly the best word to describe Emma Thompson's BAFTA Screenwriters' Lecture, hilariously delivered tonight in London. It included a physical demonstration of her writing process; pearls of wisdom shared with the filmmaker attendees; and an anecdote about how a period sketch she wrote featuring a Victorian-era virgin encountering a penis led to her penning Sense And Sensibility. The event, a Thompson-directed vari ...
