Idris Elba based Mandela role on dad

Dec 6 2013, 3:04am CST | by Bang Movies

Idris Elba based his Nelson Mandela role on his late father.

The 41-year-old actor plays the anti-apartheid revolutionary, who died last night (05.12.13) aged 95, in biopic 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom', and admits he looks very similar to his late father, who recently passed away from lung cancer aged 76, when portraying Mandela as an old man.

When asked how he felt when he saw himself with white hair and wrinkles while playing the former South African President at a later stage of his life, he replied: ''Funny, because that's how we designed the older Mandela to assimilate how I would look, and ironically I looked just like my old man. I designed my Mandela on my dad.''

Idris admits his father got emotional when he watched his son take on the iconic role because he knew it would be one of the last times he would see him on the big screen.

He added to The Sun newspaper: ''He cried. He was so emotional, because I think he must have known, if I'm really honest about it.

''He must have thought it was one of the last times he was going to see one of my really big performances.

''It's a sad film and now, when I think about it, it must have been emotional for him. He must have known. We were all in denial. It was a great moment to share.''

Idris attended the Royal Premiere of 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom' in London's Leicester Square last night alongside his co-star Naomie Harris - who plays Mandela's ex-wife Winnie - as well as Prince William and Duchess Catherine, and the 'Luther' actor admits he did ''so much'' research before he started filming.

He told BANG Showbiz: ''I was more of a journalist than an actor when I first got the role [as Mandela]. I didn't know as much as I'd like to about him, there is so much to learn.

''Especially about his aura, about the way people feel about him because you can't really act that. You just have to have some understanding of it, so that's what I did.''

Mandela's daughters Zindzi and Zenani Mandela were also at the premiere and they immediately left the screening of the movie - which is based on the late leader's 1994 autobiography of the same name - upon hearing about their father's death.

A spokesman for the Nelson Mandela Foundation said: ''They received the news of their father's passing during the screening and immediately left the cinema.''

‘No Good Deed’ Review

Sep 12 2014 5:01pm CDT | Source: screen rant

In the end, No Good Deed is pretty much what it promises to be: your standard home-invasion thriller. No Good Deed follows Terri (Taraji P. Henson), an Atlanta housewife and mother of two, who finds herself having to make a risky decision on a dark and stormy night. That decision is whether or not to provide aid to one Colin Evans (Idris Elba), a tall, dark and handsome man who was apparently injured in car crash. Being the good woman that ...

No Good Deed Exclusive: Taraji P. Henson Calls Idris Elba a "Monster!"

Sep 11 2014 4:53pm CDT | Source: movie fanatic

In No Good Deed, star Taraji P. Henson plays Terri. And Terri makes a bit of an error in judgment when her husband’s out of town and she lets a stranger (Idris Elba) into her home who has car trouble. As you see in the No Good Deed trailer, it starts a terrifying journey that finds both actors channeling new heights of awesomeness. For Henson, tackling a character in Terri that finds inner strength that was there all along was such a joy. She also h ...

Stringer Bell and Jimmy McNulty to reunite (probably as fish) in FINDING DORY!

No word on who they're playing, but presumably they appear as a pair. Read the full article on AICN After PLANES payed homage to TOP GUN by featuring Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards as talking fighter jets, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised by any more unlikely reteams in animated family films.   But who saw this coming?   A decade after they last faced down on THE WIRE, Dominic West and Id ...

In a piece of news that is more fun than real, Denzel Washington took part of an AMA Reddit Q&A to promote his film The Equalizer and it was the usual question and answers until one fan posed a query that probably should have been asked 30 years ago. Would he play James Bond? “The next James Bond? They better hurry up! Yes I would! Who's doing James Bond now..Daniel Craig! Did they shoot another one? Everybody s ...

Benedict Cumberbatch to Play Shere Khan in The Jungle Book!

Aug 19 2014 6:23pm CDT | Source: movie pilot

Who doesn't love Benedict Cumberbatch? He's Smaug, Sherlock and Khan, and he is one of the nicest nerd-actors to boot. The man is just so darned polite! He actively changed the name of his fandom because he was uncomfortable with a word that he felt to be derogatory; how's that for fan appreciation? He dances, he's silly, he makes hilarious videos and always takes pictures with his fans, he officiated his friend ...
