Kate Winslet gets cool points from kids with Divergent

Sep 13 2013, 11:12am CDT | by Bang Movies

Kate Winslet accepted a role in 'Divergent' because she wanted her kids to think she was ''cool''.

The Oscar-winning actress has joked she signed on to star in the Neil Burger-directed film, which is based on Veronica Roth's best-selling dystopian trilogy, since she knew her teenage children would be impressed.

Kate will play cold and calculating Jeanine Matthews, the brainy head of the 'Erudite' faction, who attempts to take control in a world where people are divided into four groups based on personality type.

She told MTV News: ''I didn't have any hesitation at all. It was such a great script. It's a fantastic book. My daughter is going to be 13, and my son is almost 10, and they're getting to that age where this is the type of literature they're going to be reading very soon.

''In fact, my daughter, two days ago, came home from school and went, 'Mum! You're never going to believe it. Rufus came up to me at school and said, 'Is your mum really in Divergent? Is there going to be a premiere? Can you get me a ticket?'

''My daughter suddenly [had a] new-found respect. 'My mum is actually really cool.' I'm just going to go with that. I did it because I wanted my kids to think I was cool.''

Kate is due to be joined by 'The Descendants' breakout star Shailene Woodley as heroine Tris Prior, who is branded dangerous due to her 'divergent' personality type.

Despite the novels having a cult following of young fans, Winslet prefers not to think of the film and its subsequent sequels being labelled a franchise.

The 37-year-old blonde sighed: ''It's funny. I think I'm developing a kind of subconscious loathing of the word 'franchise'.

''I just think of something that's packaged, something you can buy on a shelf and is immediately disposable. I don't know. It's a really weird word for me.''

Jul 29 2014 5:30pm CDT | Source: aintitcool

Adaptation of the series by James Dashner. Read the full article on AICN The YA adaptation trend is still going strong, and THE MAZE RUNNER looks like it fits nicely in the mold of both HUNGER GAMES and DIVERGENT with its plot of a bunch of future youngsters surviving a template of their society, in this case a big-ass maze.   There are no big-name co-stars to speak of (no Kate Winslet or Philip Seymour Hoffman to lend some pedigree to the proceedings), the action see ...
