Jason Bateman always wanted to direct

Sep 6 2013, 4:18am CDT | by Bang Movies

Jason Bateman became an actor so he could transition into filmmaking.

The 44-year-old star's directorial debut 'Bad Words' has just been screened at the Toronto Film Festival, and he admitted working behind the camera was always his main ambition.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: ''Quite simply, I said to my agent, 'Please don't wait for me to have an opening in my acting schedule to pursue the directing stuff. Understand that I'm only acting to create the kind of relevance or capital necessary to get a directing job'.

''It's really the only reason I've been acting for the last 20 years of this career. I told him, 'I'm not gonna know when that moment is. I don't have any objectivity. You're gonna need to let me know when the community is ready to support me as a director.' ''

Jason - who also stars in the movie - admitted he may not have made the switch to directing earlier in his career, but is happy to now his ''work ethic'' has coincided with his availability.

He explained: ''It's certainly appropriate that I should look for a different job. Usually people, after 30 years, are either retiring or looking for a promotion or a career change of some sort.

''It's a job that I've had my eye on for a long, long time as someone who is a big fan of the process of creating fake worlds.

''Maybe if I'd been given this opportunity 20 years ago, I may have said, 'Oh, who wants to work that hard? Just let me learn my lines and show up on the set and hit my mark'. But my work ethic and my ambition are equal to my access right now, which is a really fortunate thing.''

THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU Review

Sep 19 2014 11:08am CDT | Source: Collider

[This is a re-post of my This Is Where I Leave You review from the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.  The film opens in theaters nationwide today.] Life is what happens when you’re busy making plans, or so the saying goes.  There are some trite phrases that, while clichéd, kind of ring true, and in the case of This Is Where I Leave You, director Shawn Levy’s adaptation of the Jonathan Tropper novel of the same name, the Altman family has certainly seen better days.  The pat ...

Sep 19 2014 8:30am CDT | Source: movie fanatic

Jonathan Tropper’s novel This Is Where I Leave You has made the leap to the big screen and for starters, it’s a fantastic departure for director Shawn Levy. The man behind Real Steel and the Night at the Museum movies has terrific source material and an esteemed cast that has him creating something truly special beyond anything he has done prior. The focus of the story is mostly on Jason Bateman’s Judd Altman, a man who believes he has it all. ...

Shawn Levy & Hugh Jackman Are Still Trying to Make 'Real Steel 2'

Sep 8 2014 9:41am CDT | Source: First Showing

Before the robot boxing sci-fi flick Real Steel hit theaters in the fall of 2011, DreamWorks had already commissioned the first film's writer John Gatins to write a sequel. But as the release of the film got closer, it wasn't clear how quickly a sequel would happen, mostly because of Hugh Jackman's busy schedule, which always seems to be filling up fast. We've assumed the project was abandoned, but while director ...

This is Where I Leave You Review

Sep 7 2014 7:30pm CDT | Source: ign

This review is part of IGN's cover of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. When the movie industry lost room for tonally curious family dramas — the Five Easy Pieces, Ordinary People, and What's Eating Gilbert Grapes of the world — the genre retreated to independent film. Exceptions crop up, when enough actors of a particular caliber gather to get their quirk on. The slight This Is Where I Leave You charms as that brand of indie gone Hollywood. Directed by Shawn Levy (Real ...
