James Cameron sued for $50m over Avatar

Jul 1 2013, 10:18am CDT | by

James Cameron is being sued for $50 million by a British artist over claims he stole ideas for the film 'Avatar'.

The director - whose 3D blockbuster became the highest grossing movie of all time, making more than $2.8 billion worldwide - has been accused of ''willful and deliberate copying, dissemination and exploitation'' by artist Roger Dean in a lawsuit filed last week.

Dean is claiming that Cameron must have studied his work before making 'Avatar' and that, in particular, the floating islands and massive trees on the fictional planet of Pandora heavily resemble his own paintings.

In legal documents, the artist - described in the papers as ''an international artist and designer, whose evocative and visionary images created a new genre of work'' - claims Cameron ''studied and referenced his art in preparation for the film''.

The papers continued: ''The similarities of each such work are substantial, continuing, and direct so as to rule out any accidental copying or similarity in scenes common to the genre.''

The artist also pointed out the similarities between the Tree of Life and the Home Tree of Avatar's fictional alien race, the Na'vi, and his works, Pathway and Floating Jungle.

Dean said his claims were backed up by ''numerous comments on the internet''.

Cameron - who won a best director Oscar for his earlier smash hit 'Titanic' - has said publicly that he first came up with the idea for 'Avatar' in 1995.

The director is currently working on two sequels, the first of which is expected to be released in 2015.

One FX Shot In ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Took 1030 Iterations

Jul 14 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: slash film

'El Amanecer del Planeta de los Simios' Madrid Premiere
One of my favorite shots in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes involves an ape taking control of a tank and running amuck in post apocalyptic San Francisco. Its great because of the way its presented — the sequence appears to be a single shot mounted from the back of the tank turret. During my conversation with director Matt Reeves, he talked a bit about the frustrating long process of waiting over a ...

Jul 9 2014 11:57am CDT | Source: Deadline

OSCAR-JAMES CAMERON
After 12 days of release (and a bit of confusion over official numbers) Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age Of Extinction now has the distinction of passing Avatar as the highest-grossing film ever in China. With $225.1M (1,396M RMB), the movie has bested James Cameron’s record of $221.9M that was set in 2010. On Tuesday, Chinese research firm Ent Group reported that the Autobots had overtaken the Na’vi as of July 6 with $222.74M, but Paramount has just weighed in with its official numbers. Becaus ...

Transformers 4 Now Highest Grossing Movie in China Ever

Jul 9 2014 10:57am CDT | Source: movie pilot

OSCAR-JAMES CAMERON
Paramount might be having a hard time with some of their Chinese sponsors, but I very doubt they're regretting getting involved in the Chinese movie industry. As of yesterday, Transformers: Age of Extinction is now the highest grossing movie in China. Ever. This is pretty big deal considering China has its own, somewhat insulated movie industry, and until this week, local hit Lost In Thailand was sitting in second place. Last weekend Transformers 4 took second plac ...

With Adrien Brody in Jackie Chan's latestA $65 million price tag might seem like chump change to the likes of James Cameron, but Dragon Blade’s budget makes it one of the three most expensive films shot in China. Watch: 'Terminator 2' Chase Scene Recreated in 'Grand Theft Auto 5'

Riders clad in traditional samurai attir
With the reboot Terminator: Genesis on the way (which still has ties to the original franchise storyline), there's no better time to be reminiscing about James Cameron's sci-fi action films. The 25th anniversary of Terminator 2: Judgment Day is just a couple years away, but some fans have paid tribute a little prematurely, and in a very cool way. For those who don't know, the sandbox city in the video game Grand Theft Auto V is called Los Santos, but it's clearly modeled af ...

VOTD: ‘Terminator 2′ Chase Remade in ‘Grand Theft Auto 5′

Jun 5 2014 8:00am CDT | Source: slash film

James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day is one of those movies we’ve all seen a million times. When it’s on television, its familiarity is like a warm blanket we can snuggle up in and can enjoy from any point. We even do other things while watching, without getting lost, because we know it so well. In fact, we know it so well it’s probably lost some of its power. When we first saw the T-1000 emerge from flaming wreckage, or a Mack Truck fly of ...
