James Cameron sued for $50m over Avatar

Jul 1 2013, 10:18am CDT | by

James Cameron is being sued for $50 million by a British artist over claims he stole ideas for the film 'Avatar'.

The director - whose 3D blockbuster became the highest grossing movie of all time, making more than $2.8 billion worldwide - has been accused of ''willful and deliberate copying, dissemination and exploitation'' by artist Roger Dean in a lawsuit filed last week.

Dean is claiming that Cameron must have studied his work before making 'Avatar' and that, in particular, the floating islands and massive trees on the fictional planet of Pandora heavily resemble his own paintings.

In legal documents, the artist - described in the papers as ''an international artist and designer, whose evocative and visionary images created a new genre of work'' - claims Cameron ''studied and referenced his art in preparation for the film''.

The papers continued: ''The similarities of each such work are substantial, continuing, and direct so as to rule out any accidental copying or similarity in scenes common to the genre.''

The artist also pointed out the similarities between the Tree of Life and the Home Tree of Avatar's fictional alien race, the Na'vi, and his works, Pathway and Floating Jungle.

Dean said his claims were backed up by ''numerous comments on the internet''.

Cameron - who won a best director Oscar for his earlier smash hit 'Titanic' - has said publicly that he first came up with the idea for 'Avatar' in 1995.

The director is currently working on two sequels, the first of which is expected to be released in 2015.

F1 Grand Prix of Bahrain - Practice
A little while ago I took it upon myself to have a second viewing of Ridley Scott's Prometheus, and while I find the movie to be decent enough, one thing in particular slightly bothered me; the technology. Now, when I say technology I mean both the technology used to create the film, and the technology within the film, why exactly does it all bother me? Allow me to explain.CGI and the Death of Practical Effects:Le ...

One FX Shot In ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Took 1030 Iterations

Jul 14 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: slash film

'El Amanecer del Planeta de los Simios' Madrid Premiere
One of my favorite shots in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes involves an ape taking control of a tank and running amuck in post apocalyptic San Francisco. Its great because of the way its presented — the sequence appears to be a single shot mounted from the back of the tank turret. During my conversation with director Matt Reeves, he talked a bit about the frustrating long process of waiting over a year to finally see the final vision realized through co ...

Transformers 4 Now Highest Grossing Movie in China Ever

Jul 9 2014 10:57am CDT | Source: movie pilot

20th Commonwealth Games - Day 2: Swimming
Paramount might be having a hard time with some of their Chinese sponsors, but I very doubt they're regretting getting involved in the Chinese movie industry. As of yesterday, Transformers: Age of Extinction is now the highest grossing movie in China. Ever. This is pretty big deal considering China has its own, somewhat insulated movie industry, and until this week, local hit Lost In Thailand was sitting in second place. Last weekend Transformers 4 took second place and then com ...
