J.J. Abrams named top sci-fi guru

Jul 25 2013, 10:14am CDT | by Bang Movies

J.J. Abrams has been named the top talent in the sci-fi genre by SFX magazine.

The 'Star Trek Into Darkness' director - who was recently selected by Disney to helm the eagerly anticipated 'Star Wars Episode VII' - has topped the sci-fi magazine's annual Hot 50 list marking the brightest and the best in the fantasy spectrum, beating 'Avengers' director Joss Whedon and 'The Hunger Games' beauty Jennifer Lawrence.

Nick Setchfield, features editor of SFX, said: ''Putting together SFX's Hot 50 list is always a fiercely contested process, but we always knew J.J. Abrams would be there at number one.

''He's now in charge of 'Star Wars', the biggest franchise in cinema - the one that created the whole idea of blockbuster sci-fi movies in the first place. We can't wait to see what he does in that universe.''

Whedon - whose blockbuster movie 'The Avengers' became the third-highest-grossing film of all time with takings of $1.5 billion - nabbed second place, whilst Lawrence ranked third for her widely applauded portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in the big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' epic fantasy novel.

Other stars who made the list include 'Game of Thrones' executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who recently enjoyed record ratings for the third season of the hit show, and 'Man of Steel' screenwriter David S. Goyer.

Interestingly, Abrams, Whedon and Goyer will all be behind big sci-fi movies due for release in 2015. which could put them all in direct contention for the number one spot on the Hot 50 list.

Abrams will direct 'Star Wars'; Whedon will helm superhero sequel 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'; and Goyer is set to write a blockbuster movie teaming Superman with fellow DC Comics character, Batman.

SFX magazine's Hot 50 - top 10:

1. J.J. Abrams - writer, director and producer

2. Joss Whedon - writer, director

3. Jennifer Lawrence - actress

4. David S. Goyer - screenwriter and director

5. Kathleen Kennedy - producer

6. The Twelfth Doctor - character

7. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss - 'Game of Thrones' showrunners

8. Steven Moffat - 'Doctor Who' showrunner

9. Mark Millar - comic book writer

10. Joe Hill - novellist

Star Wars Episode VII: Oscar Isaac Talks Star Wars Old & New

Sep 30 2014 2:21pm CDT | Source: movie fanatic

Oscar Isaac is a busy man since he scored the role of a lifetime in the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. He has The Two Faces of January landing soon and of course, there’s that little independent film he’s shooting now in London that goes by the name of Star Wars: Episode VII. Isaac was talking to The Huffington Post about his upcoming projects and the state of his career, and naturally the conversation turned to the galaxy far, far away. And although he said that you “can’t say ...

STAR TREK: THE COMPENDIUM Blu-ray Review

Sep 30 2014 10:51am CDT | Source: Collider

Paramount committed an egregious faux pas last year with its release of Star Trek: Into Darkness by sprinkling different extras on different Blu-rays.  If you bought your disc at Target, you got one set of extras.  If you bought it at Best Buy, you got a different set.  If you wanted all of them, you basically had to buy multiple copies of the same movie, then vent your fiery wrath across the Internet.  Trekkies hit the roof and with good rea ...

TV Review: ‘Star Wars Rebels’

Sep 29 2014 9:30am CDT | Source: variety

Perhaps the “Star Wars” franchise’s worst-kept secret during the second-trilogy era is that its best screen depictions have come via TV animation. Inaugurating the Disney-synergy juggernaut before director J.J. Abrams can get there, “Star Wars Rebels” continues this trend, offering a sly, stylish offshoot — introducing a new lineup of characters very much in the... Read more » ...

STAR WARS EPISODE VII Concept Image Depicts Epic Lightsaber Duel

Sep 26 2014 9:38am CDT | Source: Collider

Another day, another image from Star Wars: Episode VII, but this one just happens to be the best thing I've seen from the movie so far.  It depicts a lightsaber duel under the Millenium Falcon with a Darth Vader-like figure fighting a Rebel with a green lightsaber.  It's epic looking, and for a second I get excited but then I remember the prequels and how flat they were visually (not to mention narratively).  Then I get excited ...

New Concept Art Reveals STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Chrome Trooper

Sep 25 2014 1:48pm CDT | Source: Collider

Remember last month when some genuine concept art from Star Wars: Episode VII started popping up, revealing the new Stormtroopers and the costume designs for Han Solo?  Well the same source is at it again, as they’ve now revealed a Chrome Trooper image by way of even more concept art.  Thankfully this isn’t incredibly spoilerly, but it’s neat to see how director J.J. Abrams is making the franchise his own by tweaking some very familiar designs.  The Millenniu ...

STAR TREK 3 Might Include William Shatner… If He Decides to Show Up

Sep 22 2014 5:39pm CDT | Source: Collider

I remember the friction between William Shatner and J.J. Abrams before the release of Star Trek reboot in 2009.  If I recall, there were some awkward exchanges (and even videos) bandied about regarding Shatner's displeasure with his cameo being cut.  For whatever reason he didn't appear in Star Trek Into Darkness either, but now there's a sliver of hope to confuse the timeline even more in Star Trek 3. Appare ...

Sep 22 2014 1:55pm CDT | Source: Collider

Even though J.J. Abrams is currently busy in a galaxy far, far away, he’s still got time to turn back the clock to November 22, 1963 to explore what might happen if someone got the opportunity to go back in time and stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy because it was just announced that Hulu gave the adaptation of Stephen King’s 11/22/63 a direct-to-series order. Bad Robot, King, executive producer-writer Bridget Carpenter and Warner Bros. Television w ...
