J.J. Abrams named top sci-fi guru

Jul 25 2013, 10:14am CDT | by Bang Movies

J.J. Abrams has been named the top talent in the sci-fi genre by SFX magazine.

The 'Star Trek Into Darkness' director - who was recently selected by Disney to helm the eagerly anticipated 'Star Wars Episode VII' - has topped the sci-fi magazine's annual Hot 50 list marking the brightest and the best in the fantasy spectrum, beating 'Avengers' director Joss Whedon and 'The Hunger Games' beauty Jennifer Lawrence.

Nick Setchfield, features editor of SFX, said: ''Putting together SFX's Hot 50 list is always a fiercely contested process, but we always knew J.J. Abrams would be there at number one.

''He's now in charge of 'Star Wars', the biggest franchise in cinema - the one that created the whole idea of blockbuster sci-fi movies in the first place. We can't wait to see what he does in that universe.''

Whedon - whose blockbuster movie 'The Avengers' became the third-highest-grossing film of all time with takings of $1.5 billion - nabbed second place, whilst Lawrence ranked third for her widely applauded portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in the big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' epic fantasy novel.

Other stars who made the list include 'Game of Thrones' executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who recently enjoyed record ratings for the third season of the hit show, and 'Man of Steel' screenwriter David S. Goyer.

Interestingly, Abrams, Whedon and Goyer will all be behind big sci-fi movies due for release in 2015. which could put them all in direct contention for the number one spot on the Hot 50 list.

Abrams will direct 'Star Wars'; Whedon will helm superhero sequel 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'; and Goyer is set to write a blockbuster movie teaming Superman with fellow DC Comics character, Batman.

SFX magazine's Hot 50 - top 10:

1. J.J. Abrams - writer, director and producer

2. Joss Whedon - writer, director

3. Jennifer Lawrence - actress

4. David S. Goyer - screenwriter and director

5. Kathleen Kennedy - producer

6. The Twelfth Doctor - character

7. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss - 'Game of Thrones' showrunners

8. Steven Moffat - 'Doctor Who' showrunner

9. Mark Millar - comic book writer

10. Joe Hill - novellist

Could The First ‘Star Wars Episode VII’ Trailer Be Coming This Year?

Oct 27 2014 2:30pm CDT | Source: slash film

Interstellar, Inherent Vice, Guardians of the Galaxy… as excited as I was for all those films coming into 2014, the thing I’m still most looking forward to is the Star Wars Episode VII teaser trailer. The problem is, with the film hitting in December 2015, the odds of that trailer coming out this year seem really slim. Some new buzz is circling the Internet, however, that not only says that director J.J. Abrams has already cut a trailer, but ...

ZERO DARK THIRTY Cinematographer Greig Fraser Will Shoot Gareth Edwards’ STAR WARS Movie

Oct 24 2014 1:28pm CDT | Source: Collider

While Lucasfilm and Disney have been incredibly tight-lipped with regards to director J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, the studios have unveiled essentially nothing about the other Star Wars films in the works.  We know that starting next year, there are plans to release a new Star Wars movie every year, and we also know that the first film after Episode VII will be a “standalone” Star Wars feature directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards ...

Now that we're done, at least for a while, with the whole William Shatner cameo saga, we have some actual facts to report regarding Star Trek 3.  First of all, while the upcoming sequel will mostly be shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, some of it will in fact be lensed in Seoul, South Korea.  And it looks like Oscar winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda (Life of Pi, TRON: Legacy) will be joining writer/director Roberto Orci behind the camera.  This marks the first time a Sta ...

Oct 2 2014 3:00pm CDT | Source: Slash Film

A great new article offers a peek behind the curtain into the brand-new Lucasfilm. It’s a profile of Kiri Hart, the company’s vice president of development, who is described as the Star Wars version of Kevin Feige. She’s the one primarily responsible for making sure all of the new Star Wars stories connect to each other and are up to the level of quality Star Wars fans expect. We’re talking TV shows, movies, video games, theme park attractions, the works. Basical ...

Oscar Isaac is a busy man since he scored the role of a lifetime in the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. STAR TREK: THE COMPENDIUM Blu-ray Review

Sep 30 2014 10:51am CDT | Source: Collider

Paramount committed an egregious faux pas last year with its release of Star Trek: Into Darkness by sprinkling different extras on different Blu-rays.  If you bought your disc at Target, you got one set of extras.  If you bought it at Best Buy, you got a different set.  If you wanted all of them, you basically had to buy multiple copies of the same movie, then vent your fiery wrath across the Internet.  Trekkies hit the roof and with good reason: it took the double-dip ...

TV Review: ‘Star Wars Rebels’

Sep 29 2014 9:30am CDT | Source: variety

Perhaps the “Star Wars” franchise’s worst-kept secret during the second-trilogy era is that its best screen depictions have come via TV animation. Inaugurating the Disney-synergy juggernaut before director J.J. Abrams can get there, “Star Wars Rebels” continues this trend, offering a sly, stylish offshoot — introducing a new lineup of characters very mu ...
