Cate Blanchett: Woody Allen is a 'fantastic writer'

Jul 24 2013, 3:48am CDT | by Bang Movies

Cate Blanchett has praised Woody Allen for being a ''fantastic writer''.

The 41-year-old actress was quick to defend the legendary filmmaker when appearing on the 'Late Show With David Letterman' to promote her latest drama 'Blue Jasmine', which was both scripted and directed by Allen.

The TV host to joked that the 77-year-old scriptwriter - whose career spans half a century - often sleeps on the job, prompting Blanchett to joke, ''He's asleep or on his blackberry.''

She added: ''No, no, look, most of his direction happens in the script and it was such a great script. I mean, when Woody Allen calls you take that call.

''It's usually a quick call between 45 seconds and a minute and a half. I think, well if you ask him a question he'll answer, he's not rude. He's such a great writer. ''

Blanchett takes the lead in the drama, which focuses on woman who heads to San Francisco after a life crisis, where she reconnects with her sister.

Discussing the role, she said: ''Jasmine, the character I play, is such a fantastic creation and you think back to the pantheon of the films that he's made, there are some fantastic female characters.''

Allen - whose extensive film catalogue includes 'Midnight in Paris' and 'To Rome With Love' - has headed up an impressive cast for the film.

Commenting on her co-stars, Blanchett gushed: ''It's such a great, eclectic bunch of people, Andrew Dice Clay, Louis CK, Peter Sarsgaard is in it, Alec Baldwin and the gorgeous Sally Hawkins. So it was really a great bunch of theatre animals, so many theatre actors.''

‘The Humbling’ Trailer: Al Pacino Embraces the Chaos of Aging

Sep 3 2014 4:00pm CDT | Source: Slash Film

Al Pacino shows up in two big festival films this year: David Gordon Green’s Manglehorn, and The Humbling from Barry Levinson. Here’s a first The Humbling trailer, in which Pacino plays an aging actor who embarks upon an affair with a younger woman (Greta Gerwig) after he has a minor breakdown. OK, maybe not such a minor one. If that sounds like it should really be Woody Allen material, keep in mind that the film is an adaptation of the novel by Philip R ...

Ridley Scott Says He Will “Probably” Direct the BLADE RUNNER Sequel After THE MARTIAN; Talks PROMETHEUS 2

Aug 25 2014 6:18pm CDT | Source: Collider

Ridley Scott is a lot like Clint Eastwood and Woody Allen in that he’s become an incredibly prolific filmmaker in his 70s, but he differs from those two directors in that the projects he’s tackling are massive.  In the last four years, Scott has directed Robin Hood, Prometheus, The Counselor, and most recently the Biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, and in between he found time to helm a pilot called The Vatican that Showtime ultimately passed on.  Scott is next gearing up to shoot the sci-fi ...

EMMYS: Actors Leave Their Mark By Working From The Director’s Chair

Aug 12 2014 5:25pm CDT | Source: Deadline

The answer is one of Hollywood's oldest clichés: Ask an actor about career aspirations and you'll get some variation of, "What I really want to do is direct." Well, maybe they all don't want to, but it certainly tops many an actor's bucket list. The desire to move into the director's chair seems to have become a natural progression for several series television performers. While some filmmakers--Woody Allen an ...

Why Do Awards And Festivals Honor Controversial Artists Like Roman Polanski?

Aug 12 2014 8:11am CDT | Source: Deadline

It seems odd that either the Festival del film Locarno or Roman Polanski thought that honoring the filmmaker for lifetime achievement would be a good idea. This is the second recent time–after Woody Allen’s Golden Globe tribute was followed by a phalanx of nasty tweets from his ex-wife Mia Farrow and estranged biological son Dylan Farrow–that an award sparked more shame than honor on its recipient. Citing “unacceptable ...
