Ryan Reynolds drops out of Highlander

Ryan Reynolds has dropped out of the upcoming 'Highlander' re-make.

The actor was set to play immortal Scottish warrior Connor McLeod in the new version of the 1986 action film, but has walked away from the project just months after '28 Weeks Later' director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo also quit.

Backers Summit Entertainment are said to be back to square one with the movie, searching for both a lead actor and director.

Fresnadillo apparently left due to ''creative differences'' with the studio in November after a year of working on the movie. Producers Neal Moritz and Peter Davis had vowed to find a replacement as soon as possible, but no-one has yet been appointed.

The project has been in the pipeline for a number of years, with Justin Lee was cast as the original lead in 2009. He parted ways with the project in August 2011 to star in 'Fast and Furious 6'.

The original film, starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, was a cult hit, although its 1991 sequel 'Highlander II: The Quickening' was a box office bomb.

Ryan, 36, is said to be concentrating on other projects, including starring opposite Jeff Bridges in Universal's supernatural film 'R.I.P.D' and upcoming thriller 'Selfless'.
