Eddie Redmayne to play Stephen Hawking?

Jun 13 2013, 4:30am CDT | by

Eddie Redmayne is being lined up to play Stephen Hawking.

The 'Les Miserables' breakout star has been offered the role of the celebrated theoretical physicist in new biopic, 'Theory of Everything', according to Deadline.

Best Documentary Oscar-winner James Marsh will direct the feature, while Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing based on a script by Anthony McCarten.

The film is set to focus on Stephen's personal life and his relationship with his wife rather than his scientific endeavours. The lead female character is thought to be Hawking's first wife, Jane Wilde, and not his second spouse, Elaine Mason.

The physicist suffers from a degenerative motor neuron disease related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and is almost entirely paralysed, communicating only via a speech-generating device, so the role would be a tough challenge for in-demand actor Redmayne.

Hawking has portrayed himself several times on the small screen, but never in film. He voiced an animated version of himself on both 'The Simpsons' and 'Futurama', as well as guest-starring on 'The Big Bang Theory' in 2012 and appearing in a 1993 episode of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'.

Meanwhile, 'Jupiter Ascending' hunk Redmayne is also being courted to star opposite Carey Mulligan in Thomas Vinterberg's adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel 'Far From The Madding Crowd'.

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in new Jupiter Ascending trailer: watch now

Sep 26 2014 5:20am CDT | Source: Total Film

A new trailer has arrived for Jupiter Ascending, in which the Wachowski siblings pull back the curtain on the fantasy universe in which the film is set. The new teaser establishes the back story to the film, in which we learn that a powerful alien dynasty controls Earth, and doesn’t take kindly to having its ownership challenged. Because, as it turns out, Mila Kunis’ lowly toilet cleaner is actually Earth’s true heir, putting her on collision course with Eddi ...

Felicity Jones Talks THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, Staying True to Real Life, Working with Jonah Hill on TRUE STORY, and More at TIFF 2014

Sep 17 2014 6:09pm CDT | Source: Collider

One of my favorite films at this year's Toronto International Film Festival was director James Marsh’s (Man on Wire) The Theory of Everything.  The fantastic film is an adaptation of the Stephen Hawking memoir Travelling to Infinity, written by his wife Jane Hawking.  Starring Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) as Hawking, The Theory of Everything chronicles his budding relationship with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wide (Felicity Jones), heartbreaking motor neuron ...

Copernicus is really pissed about the Stephen Hawking biopic THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING that he saw at

Sep 15 2014 12:23am CDT | Source: aintitcool

AICN's resident Astrophysicist is not to be trifled with!!! Read the full article on AICN THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING makes me want to scream.  It features Eddie Redmayne’s impressive performance as Stephen Hawking, which will surely make him the frontrunner for a Best Actor trophy.  But it squanders this brilliance by failing to communicate what should be the main point of the story.  It focuses so much on Hawking’s ...

Watch Benedict Cumberbatch Play Stephen Hawking in 2004 Biopic

Sep 8 2014 5:30pm CDT | Source: slash film

Two big awards season films just bowed at TIFF: The Theory of Everything, in which Eddie Redmayne plays a young Stephen Hawking, and The Imitation Game, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as British mathematician Alan Turing. In a not-entirely-strange turn of events however, there’s another film that brings these two buzzy performances together, as Benedict Cumberbatch once played Stephen Hawking in the 2004 UK telefilm Hawking. He was, in fact, the ...

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING Review | TIFF 2014

Sep 8 2014 6:55am CDT | Source: Collider

A Stephen Hawking biopic was always an inevitability.  The man is simply too iconic and successful with too much physical and emotional baggage for filmmakers to ignore him forever.  Thankfully the movie that emerged is not as nauseatingly maudlin as reasonably feared, nor is it as harshly honest as some might have hoped.  The Theory Of Everything shoots straight for the middle in it’s telling of Hawking’s tragically inspiring life and ultimately that’s entir ...
