Hawke calls Oscars 'destructive'

Los Angeles, Feb 23 — Actor Ethan Hawke thinks the Oscars are "destructive" because they turn the art of filmmaking into a competition.

The 42-year-old has previously received two Academy Award nominations - for best supporting actor category for his performance in 2002 film "Training Day", and in the best adapted screenplay category for "Before Sunset" in 2004.

However, he doesn't like the way the Academy Awards force films into being ranked, reports contactmusic.com.

"People want to turn everything in this country (America) into a competition. So it's clear who the winner is and who the loser is. It's why they like to announce the grosses of movies, because it's a way of saying, 'This one is Number One' It's so asinine," he told Gotham magazine.

"If you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it's really destructive," he added.

Sep 2 2014 5:00pm CDT | Source: slash film

Michael Almereyda is the latest to tweak William Shakespeare’s work to suit his purposes. Almereyda’s Cymbeline sees him teaming one more with Ethan Hawke, who starred in the director’s Hamlet in 2000. Cymbeline envisions the original text as “an epic battle between dirty cops and a drug dealing biker gang set in a corruption-riddled America.” Ed Harris also stars, along with Milla Jovovich, John Leguizamo, Penn Badgley ...
