Hawke calls Oscars 'destructive'

Los Angeles, Feb 23 — Actor Ethan Hawke thinks the Oscars are "destructive" because they turn the art of filmmaking into a competition.

The 42-year-old has previously received two Academy Award nominations - for best supporting actor category for his performance in 2002 film "Training Day", and in the best adapted screenplay category for "Before Sunset" in 2004.

However, he doesn't like the way the Academy Awards force films into being ranked, reports contactmusic.com.

"People want to turn everything in this country (America) into a competition. So it's clear who the winner is and who the loser is. It's why they like to announce the grosses of movies, because it's a way of saying, 'This one is Number One' It's so asinine," he told Gotham magazine.

"If you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it's really destructive," he added.

The narrative scope accomplished in the film takes an art form existing for over 100 years down a pathway unmatched in the history of cinema. No surprise that Richard ...

The Purge Anarchy: Will You Be Purging Tonight?

Jul 17 2014 12:32pm CDT | Source: movie pilot

Maserati At Ischia Global Fest - Day 5
How excited were you to see The Purge last summer? I was so excited that I couldn't see straight. Ethan Hawke was still riding high on the Sinister train, Lena Headey had won over our black hearts with her amazing performance in Dredd and the entire concept of a yearly purge was genius. So, what happened? I can only speak for myself when I say that I was severely disappointed. There were a few good moments, but it felt more like a ...

Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino showed up to close this year's Cannes film festival, 20 years on from their Palme d'Or triumph with Pulp Fiction in 94'.
