Stand-alone Star Wars films confirmed

Feb 6 2013, 2:14am CST | by

Disney are planning some stand-alone 'Star Wars' movies.

The studio are currently working on the seventh, eighth and ninth installments of the popular sci-fi series, but have revealed writers Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan are also working on additional films that won't interfere with the on-going storyline.

Disney chief Bob Iger told CNBC: ''We plan to make 'Star Wars' 7, 8 and 9 over roughly a six-year period of time starting in 2015.

''But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time, too.''

Last year, Disney splashed out $4 billion to but George Lucas' Lucasfilm and Bob admitted the price tag was based on the value of the main three movies and resulting product sales, not the potential money to be made from spin-offs.

He said: ''When we were exploring very seriously with George [the acquisition of Lucasfilm], the idea of producing a few standalone films that were not part of the overall saga came up. Those possibilities are becoming more real.''

'Star Wars Episode VII' is scheduled for release in 2015 and Disney are prioritising the film above all else.

Bob added: ''The priority of Disney and Lucasfilm is to create a great film for 2015 and do everything we can across our businesses to help the success of that film.''

Trivia: George Lucas Originally Rejected Frank Oz as the Voice of Yoda

Aug 22 2014 9:00am CDT | Source: Slash Film

Above you can see two pieces of concept art for Yoda, designed during the development of Empire Strikes Back. Its almost impossible to imagine Yoda as a blue gnome creature with pointy toes, but that was George Lucas’ initial conception of the wise old master Jedi. I’m always fascinated by these kind of “what ifs.” What might have been if one little decision was different than what we have come to know and expect. Its hard no ...

Star Wars ‘Despecialized Edition’ in the Works

Aug 21 2014 10:34am CDT | Source: Screen Rant

Only earlier this week there was a rumor circulating that claimed Disney was intending to release unaltered versions of the original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray. Quickly debunked, the rumor did however spark interest in the many different versions of the original trilogy and how desperately fans want an official, unaltered release. The home media releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi have seen more alternate versions and updated releases than almost any o ...

Video: How Fans “Despecialized” ‘Star Wars’ But Left Improved Audio and Video

Aug 20 2014 1:45pm CDT | Source: slash film

You would need an encyclopedia to know how many different versions of the original Star Wars Trilogy are out there. From obvious changes made to create the Special Editions, or the addition of “Episode IV” to the first film, to more subtle ones like color correction or audio tweaks, there are dozens of different versions of each film. All fans want, though, are the original negatives, with no “special” addi ...

Rex From Disneyland’s Original Star Tours To Appear In ‘Star Wars Rebels’?

Aug 15 2014 11:55am CDT | Source: slash film

I remember when the Star Tours ride first opened in 1987 (am I old?) they had a ABC Magical World of Disney special which focused on the attraction. And when I finally got to ride the attraction, it was just as magical as I had imagined, taking us on a tour of a galaxy far far away at the same time as the climactic moments of the Star Wars. While many of the lands, characters and worlds we saw on the ...

/Film Interview: ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Dave Filoni Answers Burning Questions About The New Series

Aug 7 2014 9:00am CDT | Source: Slash Film

When Star Wars Rebels was first announced, I immediately had a ton of questions. How did the Jedi help start the Rebel Alliance? Does that make Luke Skywalker less significant? Who was this mysterious bad guy hunting down Jedi? Why do we need him if we have Darth Vader? How closely would the series link to the original trilogy? If anyone had the answers to those questions, it was going to be Dave Filoni. Filoni is an executive producer on ...
