Stand-alone Star Wars films confirmed

Feb 6 2013, 2:14am CST | by

Disney are planning some stand-alone 'Star Wars' movies.

The studio are currently working on the seventh, eighth and ninth installments of the popular sci-fi series, but have revealed writers Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan are also working on additional films that won't interfere with the on-going storyline.

Disney chief Bob Iger told CNBC: ''We plan to make 'Star Wars' 7, 8 and 9 over roughly a six-year period of time starting in 2015.

''But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time, too.''

Last year, Disney splashed out $4 billion to but George Lucas' Lucasfilm and Bob admitted the price tag was based on the value of the main three movies and resulting product sales, not the potential money to be made from spin-offs.

He said: ''When we were exploring very seriously with George [the acquisition of Lucasfilm], the idea of producing a few standalone films that were not part of the overall saga came up. Those possibilities are becoming more real.''

'Star Wars Episode VII' is scheduled for release in 2015 and Disney are prioritising the film above all else.

Bob added: ''The priority of Disney and Lucasfilm is to create a great film for 2015 and do everything we can across our businesses to help the success of that film.''

Marvel STAR WARS Comics Fill in the Blanks Between A NEW HOPE and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Jul 28 2014 5:36pm CDT | Source: Collider

I’m not sure if I have a burning desire to find out what happened between the first two Star Wars films A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.  It feels like if there was originally anything terribly interesting there George Lucas would have filled us in over 30 years ago.  But for those of you who are bigger Star Wars fans than me (which is pretty much everyone) it should be good news that Marvel is reuniting with the franchise for a run of three separate comic books series that f ...

Jul 28 2014 10:30am CDT | Source: Slash Film

One of the biggest mysteries regarding the new Disney cartoon Star Wars Rebels hasn’t had anything to do with Jedi, Sith, or new characters. We’ve just been wondering when we’d get to see it. At Comic-Con, the news was quietly leaked that the first episode (for which you can watch our full review here) will premiere in October 2014. Lucasfilm and Disney have not settled on a specific Star Wars Rebels release date just yet, but will do so in the new few weeks. That premiere will be in October ...

‘Star Wars’ Historian J.W. Rinzler AMA Highlights: Boba Fett Lives, More Archives Books on the Way

Jul 16 2014 2:15pm CDT | Source: slash film

Boba Fett lives. I mean, you knew that. Despite falling into the Sarlacc pit during Return of the Jedi he managed to escape, and later showed up all over the place in the Star Wars expanded universe. He even fell into the Sarlacc again, and after getting out was best man at the wedding of the bounty hunter Dengar. Seriously. But nothing in Star Wars is canon until it ends up in a movie, The Clone Wars (or Rebels) TV show, or comes out of the mouth of George Luc ...

‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ Set Image Confirms IMAX Scenes

Jul 9 2014 8:51am CDT | Source: screen rant

When George Lucas directed Star Wars back in 1977, the franchise wasn’t yet a known entity and the movie’s budget was a paltry $11 million – an amount that, even when adjusted for inflation, is far dwarfed by the $200 million+ production budget that Star Wars: Episode VII is estimated to have. Director J.J. Abrams is no stranger to large-scale revivals of popular science fiction franchises, having directed both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, and it’s to be expect ...

Practical Effects Can't Make A Comeback, Because They Never Went Away!

Jun 15 2014 6:48pm CDT | Source: movie pilot

Note: Article may contain spoilers and graphic material. (Don't say I didn't warn you.)To begin with, this is not another rant against CGI. In 1990, it became apparent to everyone that computer generated images were going to raise the bar, and change everything for film making, with the release of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and then Jurassic Park. Anyone who was around during that time will remember that the news was everywhere. Artists and technicians had worked together and used ...
