Johnny Depp lands Black Mass role

Feb 4 2013, 2:25am CST | by

Johnny Depp is to star in 'Black Mass'.

The 'Dark Shadows' actor will reteam with his 'Donnie Brasco' director Barry Levinson to portray notorious Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in the forthcoming crime thriller, Deadline reports.

The movie takes its title from Dick Lehr and Gerald O'Neill's 2001 book 'Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob' and it promises a ''highly complex'' story examining an FBI scandal.

Producer Brian Oliver said: ''I could not be more thrilled to have the biggest star in the world and Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson to finally bring this incredible story to the big screen.

'''Black Mass' expertly details the twists and turns of this highly complex story, painting a vivid portrait of Boston's underbelly and its corrupt political machine, as well as exposing the worst scandal in FBI history. It's also an examination of loyalty to family, Irish heritage, and South Boston.''

The film is scheduled to begin shooting in May, but does not yet have a release date.

Meanwhile, 'Argo' filmmaker Ben Affleck is also working on his own movie about the mobster, which has his longtime friend and collaborator Matt Damon attached to play the lead role.

Thanks to ‘Tusk’, Kevin Smith Has Funding for ‘Clerks III’

Sep 29 2014 2:30pm CDT | Source: slash film

Like almost all Kevin Smith films, Tusk has been incredibly polarizing. I found myself in the middle of the road, seeing great promise in a film with some major problems. Some loved the audaciousness of Smith’s horrific tale, while others just hated everything about it. Smith himself is very proud of Tusk, calling it the closest thing he’s ever done to what he imagined he’d be making as a filmmaker. The box office ...

‘Tusk’ Review: Kevin Smith’s Horror Film Is Ambitious But Messy in Every Way

Sep 19 2014 7:00pm CDT | Source: slash film

Kevin Smith‘s Tusk is a prime example of a filmmaker in the midst of reinvention. Every since the disaster that was Cop Out, Smith has been on a quest to become a new director. First he shunned Hollywood and self-distributed Red State, a welcome departure from his off-the-wall comedies of the past. Now he’s delving deep into horror with Tusk, the story of a man named Howard (Michael Parks) who kidnaps a podcaster na ...
