Daniel Day-Lewis grew to 'love' Lincoln

Jan 25 2013, 4:12am CST | by

Daniel Day-Lewis grew to ''love'' US President Abraham Lincoln in a unique way.

The 55-year-old actor plays the pioneering historical figure - who abolished slavery and lead America through the Civil War - and after a whole year of preparing for the role, Daniel ended up falling for his alter-ego in a way he never would have imagined.

He explained: ''[I prepared for] about a year. I read a lot. The problem was that so much has been written about him that I could be reading for the rest of my life. So I chose very carefully.

''There wasn't a day when I didn't feel grateful to be exploring his life. I grew to love him in a way I didn't realise you could love a person you've never met.''

Daniel has already won several awards for his role and is up for the Best Actor Oscar next month, but he confessed he felt wary of taking on such an iconic role as he didn't want to ''desecrate'' Lincoln's memory with his performance.

He added in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper: ''I was very aware of the responsibility involved because I didn't want to be the person who desecrated the memory of the most loved President America has known.

''So I had to ask myself if I could genuinely serve the story and serve the director, Steven Spielberg. It seemed an outlandish idea to take someone who grew up in South East London and make him President of the United States.''

'Lincoln' is out in cinemas in the UK today (25.01.13).

Well that was a bloodbath

SAG Foundation Presents A Conversations Q&A With "American Hustle's" Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence And director David O. Russell
My best year predicting the Oscars, I got 21 out of 24 right. Usually I average around 17 right. This year? An abysmal 9 correct picks. Nine. That was just all kinds of ugly. That said, I enjoyed the show a lot more when it wasn't being completely predictable. I've said for years that I enjoy the Oscars the most when things are going off the rails. Bizarre choices for the show, weird clothes and inexplicable winners make me happy. Sadly, the fashion on display was really tasteful. Th ...
