Mark Strong: John Carter looked dated

Jan 22 2013, 10:20am CST | by

Mark Strong thinks 'John Carter' flopped because it looked dated.

The actor, who played the leader of a White Martian race called the Therns in last year's action-adventure, thinks critics were very ''harsh'' on the film, which grossed just under $210 million worldwide, despite a budget of $250 million.

Speaking on 'Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Review' on BBC 5 Live, he said: ''I really liked it, and I thought people were really harsh on it. It suffered from the fact that we have seen everything in it before.

''It was written at the turn of last century, and everything - 'Star Wars', 'Star Trek', even 'Tarzan' - all comes from it really. The idea of science fiction, Edgar Rice Burroughs was the granddaddy of it all.

''So there was nothing in there that really surprised anyone, and it looked a bit dated. I really enjoyed it, my kids enjoyed it, and people I know enjoyed it.''

The movie's director, Andrew Stanton, recently admitted he felt the project - which starred Taylor Kitsch as an American Civil War veteran transported to Mars - was ''doomed to fail'' even while filming was still ongoing.

He said: ''There was this weird air the summer before of Schadenfreude, of doomed to fail.

''It isn't a nice atmosphere to be in, but what can you do about it?''

Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman star in new trailer for Before I Go To Sleep: watch now

Aug 18 2014 1:55am CDT | Source: Total Film

A new trailer has arrived online for Before I Go To Sleep, in which Nicole Kidman stars as a woman whose brain is incapable of retaining any information from one day to the next. Waking up next to her husband (Colin Firth) each day is akin to waking up next to a stranger… at least until a few fragments of memory begin to return, that is. Gradually, with the assistance of Mark Strong’s doctor, Kidman begins to piece together the events that left her with th ...

New Posters for WHIPLASH, BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP, and LAGGIES

Aug 15 2014 1:28pm CDT | Source: Collider

Posters for a trio of non-superhero, non-franchise movies have landed online, and we thought it prudent to share.  Briefly: Whiplash – Our own Matt Goldberg is quoted on the Whiplash poster for this dark drama, which stars Miles Teller as an aspiring jazz drummer who studies under a ruthless instructor (J.K. Simmons).  I’m actually quoted on the trailer myself, as the film was one of the breakout hits of this year’s Sun ...

Nicole Kidman Can’t Remember Nuthin’ in Thriller Before I Go To Sleep

Which is bad for her, because apparently her husband played by Colin Firth may or may not be who he claims to be, and that could prove dangerous for our confused gal. Plus, Mark Strong is all up in her business and such, and maybe he wants even more than just to be her friend. All of that in director Rowan Joffe’s psychological thriller “Before I Got to Sleep.” Check out a trailer, poster, and some i ...
